Can I come for part of the retreat?
Sorry, because we are interested in building community and practicing dances across the full 10 days it is important that you commit to the program from beginning to end. Please come for the whole retreat!

Can I come before the retreat, or stay additional days?
YES! There is much to see and do in and around Marrakesh, so please plan on making the Academia your base for explorations around the retreat. For prices for additional nights, see the room descriptions.

Can I bring a partner or family?
Yes! We would be delighted for you to do so. That being said, it is important that your companions be self-managing as they will not be attending the dance classes and certain celebratory events open only to past and current students of Helene. Your companions are welcome to join us on excursions and performances. If you want to bring otherwise unaccompanied children, we may be able arrange local childcare on a case-by-case basis. Please let us know well in advance if you are planning on bringing children for whom you will need childcare. Please be aware that in an old city like Marrakesh there are steep steps and open rooftops that can be hazardous for young children.

What dances will we be dancing?
This will be determined by a number of factors: how many dancers in attendance know a particular dance or want to learn it, what you want to dance and, of course, what Helene, wants us to dance for her!

Will we be performing our dances for an audience?
At this time we have no plans for a formal performance – we shall dance for each other!

What will the language of instruction be?
The primary language of instruction will be English, but as you know, Helene can teach in several languages, so you need not be worried. Since you have been in one of Helene’s projects, you will understand what is going on. Also, there will be many bi- and multilingual dance sisters available to interpret and talk to!

What will the weather be like?
Mid-November in Marrakesh the days will generally be sunny, dry and mild, nights will be cool (daytime 70-73° F/ 20-22° C; nighttime 51-53° F/10-12° C). We might have one or two rain showers during our stay.

What do I pack in the way of clothing?
Bring layers. We will be dancing inside traditional buildings with thick walls so will need layers for warmth to start with and peel as we, and the day, warm up. Bring modest, comfortable dress for excursions and some festive wear for our celebrations. Be sure to bring warm sleepwear and bed socks. Leave room in your suitcase for the treasures you will find in the souk!

What are some of the excursions we will be taking?
Still working on several exciting possibilities. Look for updates  here.

What kind of internet connectivity does Academia Arabesca have?

Are there scholarships available for dancers who need financial assistance?
